Many of you would have visited Kremlin Bar at some point during its many years on Northbourne Avenue but as great as this bar was you are certainly in for a treat at the new White Rabbit Cocktail Room that has opened in its place.

The doors opened on Thursday 1 October and we decided to check it out on the Saturday night as part of a celebratory night out in civic for my other half’s birthday.

I must admit I have never been so curious about a new bar. Alice in Wonderland was one of my favourite stories growing up and combined with cocktails and dessert, well it’s basically my dream come true!

As soon as you walk through the door you are immediately transported into an enchanting wonderland of greenery, orchards, checkered wallpaper and Alice in Wonderland decal. If you look up, you can catch a glimpse of the night sky beyond the rabbit hole displayed on an LED screen. The decorations are classy and elegant and give you the feeling you have stepped down the rabbit hole and into a new world without going overboard and risking tackiness.

The atmosphere of the bar is elegant and feminine but not to the extent that it scares off the gentleman. Both my partner and I had a fantastic night out and it make a perfect place to visit for your next date night with enough little cosy nooks and velour chairs to sit and have an intimate conversation over a cocktail and dessert.

The cocktails themselves were everything I had hoped for – decadent and pretty enough to take a thousand photos of. I personally couldn’t go past the “Queen of Hearts” on the menu that doubled up as both a cocktail and a dessert reminiscent of a strawberry milkshake and served with freeze-dried strawberries. My partner opted for the “Dead Rabbit”, a classic cocktail of “Bushmills 10yr, D.O.M Benedictine, with a dash of Angostura bitters and a dash of Regan’s orange bitters” that appeals to the more masculine tastebuds.

The desserts were just as delightful as the cocktails. There are a few choices on the menu including sundaes, affogatos, cakes and souffles and all are absolutely enchanting to look at decorated with little meringues, strawberries, flowers and raspberry gel. We will definitely be going back to try a few more items on the menu!
